Peter Pfeffer Landscapes: Time in 2 dimensions

For several of the pieces in this series of landscapes, Peter Pfeffer began by photographing familiar environments; places where he has spent a good deal of time. Over a period of days, weeks or months, he photographed people as they passed through these locations, building up a considerable number of portraits, and thereby documenting people’s interaction with these spaces. He then integrated the imagery into one picture which he believes transcends or distorts time. In this way photography, which traditionally is supposed to capture a moment in time, is turned on its head to become non-time dependent.
In other pieces in this series Peter appropriates imagery from the internet, often iconic images from pop culture or from artists he admires, with the similar goal of making them transcendent in time and place. To further this dichotomy even more he often graphically simplifies the picture.
